Pixelmess, Our Brand New Free Wordpress Theme
Introducing Pixelmess
So for the last few weeks, I've been working on a Wordpress theme (which is why there has been quite a lack of articles lately; for which I apologize). Since I made a Drupal theme last time, I thought it would be appropriate to develop a Wordpress theme this time. And so, a few weeks later, you have Pixelmess the brain child of Designmess. This is the very first Wordpress theme I have ever built, so things may be a bit glitchly at first, but hopefully you guys can help point those out and help me fix them.
How do I get it?
![]()
Once again, I am extending the offer of giving away this theme completely free to anyone who follows us on Twitter. That's right, for a limited time only anyone who follows us will be automatically direct messaged the theme download link.
If you were already following us on Twitter and want the theme: Just either shoot us a message via an @reply or a direct message, and we'll send you the theme right away. If you can't seem to get a hold of us, you can always use the contact form.
The Looks
![]()
Pixelmess is dark theme with a colorful bubble background. To be honest, its a bit hard to describe, so how about just taking a look at some screenshots or just trying out the theme live.
The jQuery enchanced Portfolio
![]()
I'm not really sure what the intended look of Pixelmess was. I suppose I simply wanted to try my hand at creating a Wordpress theme, and out came this modern, dark theme.
Features!
When building Pixelmess, I tried to incorporate many of the popular features that people were looking for in Wordpress themes. Below is a list that should cover most of them.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Widget Ready | Many sections of Pixelmess are Widget enabled. This means you can place custom text and widgets right into the section with ease using the Wordpress admin panel. The available sections include 3 sections on the home page, 3 footer regions, a sidebar region, and a section that is inside of your posts (useful for advertisements, subscribe forms, etc). |
| Cufon Enabled | Cufon is a easy to use javascript rendering library for custom fonts. Using cufon, headers and titles are automatically rendered and replaced with their custom font counterparts. |
| jQuery Enhanced | jQuery is an awesome javascript library with a bunch of useful user interface options. Pixelmess makes use of jQuery to enhance many features such as a drop menu, tooltips, and more. |
| Theme Options | Pixelmess makes it easy to customize your site with various theme options including a twitter feed simply by entering your twitter username, a custom welcome message, feedburner RSS Feed, and more! |
| Featured Content Slider | Pixelmess comes with an automatic content slider and a customized home page. This slider features the latest posts and adds an awesome effect to your site. |
| Quicksand Plugin | Pixelmess incorporates the jQuery Quicksand plugin into the portfolio category (should want to use it). This makes browsing your work very easy and user friendly. Why not see for yourself? |
| Thumbnails | Adding Thumbnails to your post is easy and takes a few seconds. Once added, the images will automatically be resized, so there's no fuse! |
Installation and Usage
To make some of the functions work, follow these instructions to make sure everything gets set up properly.
First, upzip all the folder into your site's wp-content/themes folder. Then, go into your Wordpress dashboard and activate the theme.
Using the Thumbnails
![]()
The thumbnails function depends on custom fields. To activate this, go and create a new post. Inside of the post, you will see a custom field box. Create a new custom field named "Image" (without the quotation marks) and save. To use this field, upload the image to your wordpress site, and paste the URL as the value. Images will be resized automatically.
Custom Home Page
![]()
To set up your home page, first create a page and title it "Home". Then, select the Home Page Template from the Attributes section.
![]()
Now go into Settings > Reading and change the front page from Your Latest Posts to Static Front Page and choose the page you just created.
Using the Portfolio
![]()
To use the portfolio and the Quicksand Plugin, just create a category named "portfolio" (without the quotation marks). Then start adding posts into this category and they will automatically be integrated with the plugin.

I love the bottom of each post. The falling pixels looks kick ass. It is nice to see something so original! What an amazing design!

well, the not found thing is still in the homepage but at least now i can also see the thumbnails, just don't understand why i needed to chmod 777 the wp-contents folder...
is there any way to avoid that? I don't like to have 777 folders in my servers cause they pose as a security risk.

You might have to chmod the cache folder inside your pixelmess theme folder to 777. Depends on your web host.
This is just for the twitter caching.

ok, Thanks for your reply. the problem was that it didn't created the cache folder to create the thumbnails and put them inside.
And what about that not found error on the homepage? i can't make it go away.
Thanks!

Wow, an absolutely amazing theme. If I hadn't already have re-designed my theme recently, I would use this one!

Any change of getting the theme without Twitter? I've signed up twice and deleted my account twice because I basically for me its a waste of my time :)

I LOVE YOU'RE THEME!
I've made some mods though, like auto thumbnail from first attachment if custom field is blank (Time saver for me) and a Random background using a php script that I made that uses http headers to redirect to various Photo's from my Picasa album!
THANKS A TON SEAN! I'll be watching you closely!!
